Mercedes Benz knew how to troll with 190E gearbox before trolling was popular. An unsuspected driver puts car into "1st" and it goes backwards.

Kinja'd!!!

Yes, I know dog leg was available on other cars earlier than 190E but I don't care.

Fun fact:

My Corvair is a dog leg 3 speed. There's no indication anywhere of this. Good luck with that!

I'd assume you're talking about the dog leg manual gearbox, but it looks like you'r your picture was Kinja'd...

was it just the Cosworth's with the dogleg or did all 190E Manuals have them?

Did you see the top gear (original/uk) where Jeremy has one of these? And the German TUV inspectors get all confused? Also, this is pretty popular among track cars. IIRC the e30 ///M3 had this too.

Wasn't that the saloon episode where Jeremy had a Ford from Belgium, Hammond had an M3 that had been in an accident, and James had a 190E, which he kept reversing at stop lights? I could be behind the times though...

Yea, E is the Cosworth. They are the ones that got 16 valve motors with a dog leg.

I think it was James who had it. Richard had the "dangerous at any speed" M3, and Jeremy had the Cosworth Ford.

But yes. They made a pretty good joke out of it.

Some lady in a Mini Cooper S had almost reversed into me after I left the police station (oddly she was the lady cop who I had to report to for me to keep my license)

The worse is VW, which has no indication that you need to push down to engage it, with BMW and Mini and what not you just kina force it

Funny, I just threw on a random TG episode for background noise...

Martin Brundle called the 190E the best handling FR chassis of all time. True story.

One of the most unexpected places where you can find a dog leg, is on a last-gen Hyundai Accent.

Most cars here in Europe have the push down or pull up system to get in reverse gear.
Merc (pull), VW (older pull, newer down), Audi (down), Skoda (pull), Nissan (pull a ring up at the gearstick). Merc has a few where you have to force it into reverse gear, so the 2 clicks to the left side. Don't know for all the others, because I only listed cars I personally have driven.

Not sure which ones were sold in the US but in Europe there were many E's: 1.8E, 2.0E, 2.3E, 2.6E.

The dogleg only came with the Cosworth engineered 2.3/2.5 16v.

that's what I thought, thanks!

I think there was a 4-speed manual for the smaller E's?
I'm in Australia and I've only ever seen auto's, I'm sure they brought manuals over here though.

The 1.8 had a 4MT. 5MT optional.
